Grossular Garnet is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 7 to 7.5. Its name is derived from the Latin word for gooseberries, because of the likeness of the colors of the berries and certain light-green Grossular Garnets. Many Grossular Garnets are found in Africa.
